REconnect REveilles

This project began by analyzing the site and surrounding areas around the canal. There is currently a lack of interaction and activity on the site, and with that analysis I decided that the connecting component needed to be a place for both the community of Berlin as well as the adjacent neighborhoods.
The project became about reveling a patchwork of social history by displaying community art and reconnecting the once divided neighborhoods. This project is an opportunity to introduce a new urban condition by bringing in new and interactive context to the sight. The connection is oriented with views facing both East-West across the spree as well as North-South looking along the promenade. On the west end is an elevated platform for viewing and gathering, the excitement of this space for me comes from the dynamic canvas surface that slowly transforms from wall to ceiling and encloses the viewing platform.
This project would be an opportunity for both connection and interaction on the site, while providing a public space for the community to gather and get involved with the up and coming social history of the site.

XCHANGE

My design originated from the connections made across Germany. While examining these connections I noticed that it was not a one-way connection between cities, but a two-way connection that forms an exchange. This similar form of connection is found within the city of Berlin between its neighborhoods. However, when looking at our site the connection is lost.  Establishing a connection with this notion of exchangeability became the impetus for my design. To achieve this I needed to use an element that encompassed the idea of an exchangeable element. Therefore, I chose a cargo container to be the housing for a bridge that would reside inside. The bridge expands from the cargo container when initiated and collapses back into the container when the user has crossed. The bridge retains its element of exchangeability from this design.  The container may be picked up and placed in a new location on the site or in Berlin or possibly in Germany creating a bridge that is not a static object but a dynamic element that can be used as an identifier outside of the site.
